Psychological First Aid: What You Need to know

Psychological First Aid–What does that mean?

When faced with a crisis, a tragedy, or an accident, ensuring people’s physical safety is undoubtedly of primary importance. In order to respond to the needs of those affected many have enrolled in first aid and safety training courses in the hopes that we can be of assistance if needed. Worthwhile and necessary endeavors. However, what if the injuries experienced by the individuals involved are not physical, but, psychological?  First aid training can still help.

Psychological First Aid is an integral approach to helping victims living in the aftermath of a traumatizing event such as a natural disaster, an accident, witnessing or being the victim of a violent act, or even a “personal crisis”. Emotional distress is not always as visible as a physical injury, but it is just as painful and debilitating.

Psychological First Aid—How Can It Help

The purpose of Psychological First Aid is to assist ones in trying to cope with shock, stress, confusion, or fear resulting from a traumatic event. It is common for people to express feelings of hopelessness or anger, grief, or even guilt. This can have an immense negative impact of not only the short-term health of the individual but also the long term well being and stability. These kinds of painful symptoms can take a toll and could even affect the person’s ability to care for themselves or others. Psychological First Aid can provide the assistance needed to help reassure and regain a feeling of security and safety, an essential part of the healing process.
