Basic Life Support (BLS – Formerly HCP) & / Or Airway Management / Oxygen Therapy
The new Canadian Red Cross BLS Program replaces the previous Canadian Red Cross Health Care Provider Program (HCP).
Designed to build participant confidence in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and provide the important steps to perform a rapid assessment, perform Basic Life Support (BLS) skills, and perform rapid defibrillation. Airway Management and Oxygen Therapy can also be added as additional certifications to this course.
Participants may include in-facility care providers, including nursing staff, care aides, medical and dental professionals. Pre-hospital care providers, which may include professionals in fire service, rescue team, sports-medicine, lifeguards and ski patrol.
BLS Course Content:
- Glove removal
- Primary Assessment
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Airway Obstruction
- Assisted Ventilation
- Basic Life Support special considerations
Airway Management Course Content:
- Opening the mouth
- Cross finger technique
- Tongue-jaw lift
- Airway adjuncts-insertion and removal
- Oropharyngeal (OPA) airways
- Nasopharyngeal (NPA) airways
- Supraglottic airways (Awareness only)
- Suction
Oxygen Therapy Course Content:

- Pulse oximetry
- Supplemental oxygen
- Oxygen cylinders
- Oxygen regulators
- Oxygen delivery devices
- Administering oxygen
Course Length:
BLS is a 4-hour program. Airway Management/Oxygen Therapy is a 2-hour program. You can choose BLS only, or Airway Management/Oxygen Therapy only. A combined full-day course will be 7 hours (including breaks).
Prerequisites
- None
Certification:
- BLS (formerly HCP) participants must demonstrate all course skill competencies; achieve a minimum of 75% mark for written, closed book, knowledge evaluation; attend & participate in 100% of course. 1-year certification (digital certificate issued upon successful completion)
- Airway Management participants must successfully demonstrate all course skill competencies; achieve a minimum 75% mark for written, closed book, knowledge evaluation; attend & participate in 100% of the course. 3-year certification (digital certificate issued upon successful completion)
- Oxygen Therapy participants must successfully demonstrate all course skill competencies; achieve a minimum 75% mark for written, closed book, knowledge evaluation; attend & participate in 100% of the course. 3-year certification (digital certificate issued upon successful completion)
Recertification
- 2.0 Hours
Course Fee:
- BLS course only $75 + GST
- Airway Management/Oxygen Therapy course only $65
- Combined Full day program BLS and Airway Management/Oxygen Therapy course $125
